Injuries from trail running had left me with torn tendons in my feet, making it impossible to tackle the long hike I’d planned to enjoy Colorado’s fall mountain views. Frustrated and feeling defeated, I stopped a few hundred feet in, sitting down on a log to stew over my mistake of overtraining. That’s when I noticed a cluster of Stinking Orange Oyster mushrooms (Phyllotopsis nidulans for fellow mushroom fans) growing on the log beside me.
As I crouched down to get a better look, I realized the soft mid-day light under the ferns created an entirely different vibe—like a hidden world waiting to be noticed. Instead of pushing on, I lit a joint, abandoned my hiking plans, and decided to focus on photographing the small wonders around me. After spending some time capturing the scene, a grasshopper landed on the mushrooms, giving me the perfect shot of this tiny moment of magic.
It was a great reminder that you don’t always have to go far to find something beautiful in nature. Sometimes, just taking the time to slow down and really look at the details right in front of you can be just as awe-inspiring as the grandest views.
