Print: Laguna Colorada
The border between Bolivia and Chile is one of the harshest environments on Earth. 15,000 ft mountain passes, volcanos, and borax lakes provide habitat for flamingoes and guanaco (undomesticated cousins to the lamma). During the summers flamingoes feast on plankton in the borax lakes and as they do so the red algae in Laguna Colorada stains their feathers a bright pink. A few flamingoes can be seen in this photo wading through the red waters as a violent crosswind pulls the heat of the mid-day sun away.
This particular shot was significant in my life. A few years previously I had been asked by my Spanish professor to plan a road trip through South America. To be honest, I thought the project was a joke, but nonetheless, I dove into research and came across Laguna Colorada. The beautiful red lake caught my eye and became a centerpiece in my make-believe road trip when I presented it to the class in broken Spanish a few days later.
Years after that a college buddy reached out to me out of the blue and asked if I wanted to join him on a road trip from Ecuador to Chile. I was working remotely for a tech company and I immediately said yes to the adventure. My old road trip presentation had become a reality and I found myself standing on the bank of Laguna Colorada enjoying the sun as my lips swelled with fever blisters from the harsh winds.
Sometimes you have to let go and dream a little, only then does life surprise you with serendipitous treats.
